pesticides + asbestos + mycotoxins + wellness

Today, I’m excited to have a special guest on the blog. Krista P is 23, lives in Florida and is into yoga, reading, writing, wellness and the environment. She got in touch and passed along this crucial, and yes, slightly scary info about toxins in our worlds. But since knowledge is power, I share her excellent info and links. Props to Kirsta for making sure we’re wary of the effects of these things on our health!
Asbestos
Asbestos is a natural mineral in drywall, tile adhesive, and insulation. When inhaled, asbestos fibers collect in the lungs and cause cancer. Mesothelioma symptoms are latent for 20-50 years, meaning that the cancer is often misdiagnosed. If you are already experiencing mesothelioma symptoms, see a doctor for a cancer screening. To be sure that your home doesn’t contain toxins like asbestos, contact a certified abatement professional.

Pesticides
Large percentages of pesticides are carcinogens. Pesticide residue causes not only cancer, but miscarriages, birth defects, nerve damage, and Parkinson’s disease. To avoid consuming produce contaminated by pesticides, eat organically grown food. Besides containing zero pesticides, organic fruits and veggies are fresher and tastier, often because of the lack of chemicals and preservatives.

Mycotoxins
Mycotoxins (mold) can cause a range of health problems, from small allergic reactions to cancer, asthma, multiple sclerosis, and heart disease. Mycotoxins can be found in contaminated buildings and may be present even if not easily detected. If your home contains mold, it’s important that you contact a professional rather than cleaning it yourself, as you might worsen your own health.

pesticides + food + environment

I’ve noticed that my entry on factory farming in China and pesticide use is very very popular.
So in light of that, I bring you this link to the AMAZING Environmental Working Group, which I love for its Skin Deep directory on the things we put ON OUR BODIES. So here, without further adieu, a little bit about what we put IN OUR BODIES and their directory of foods high and low in pesticides..

food + environment + pollution + pesticides

SCARIOS – farming practices in China are responsible for more pollution than factories! According to GREENPEACE, this has become one of China’s worst environmental crises. Greenpeace campaign director Sze Pangcheung. “China needs to step up the fight against the overuse of fertilisers and pesticides and promote ecological agriculture which has obvious advantages for human heath, the environment, and sustainable development of agriculture.”
WHAT CAN WE DO? Make sure that you buy organic and local food and support local farmers. Cheaper food from China has huge COSTS.
